DeGlorifying Guns & Saving Our Children

The “DeGlorifying Guns & Saving Our Children” community event was held Saturday, July 16, 2005 on Riverdale Avenue, between Hinsdale Street and Snediker Avenue. The purpose of the teen-targeted event was to assist teens in empowering themselves with healthy alternatives to handling disputes.
Professionals, representing agencies throughout New York City, partnered with East New York Weed & Seed and The Sabaoth Group, Inc. for the worthy cause of saving our children. These agencies included; MetroPlus, Phoenix Houses of NY, Vertex, Dept. of Consumer Affairs, Brownsville Multi-Service, HRA, Dr. Chen’s Acupuncture, and ENY Kid’s Power.
Several members of New York City’s elected officials provided support by attending the event. These officials included; Senator John Sampson, Assemblywoman Diane Gordon, Councilman Charles Barron, Judge Diana Johnson, and Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes.
Plans to expand the vision of the event are underway. The goal is to plan another community event for teens in the near future. Local school officials will be consulted as to the proper procedures for possibly incorporating the event into the middle and high schools as a program.
